A partir del análisis de algunas secciones del Códice Borgia, presuntamente mixteco, la obra suma argumentos a la existencia de una literatura proso-semasiográfica en los códices mesoamericanos. Esta categoría existe a partir de la relación entre los elementos performativos de la lectura de estos manuscritos pictóricos y lo que está pintado/escrito en ellos. Hay aproximadamente 200 signos silábico-fonéticos diferentes, de los cuales cerca de un 60 por ciento son homófonos. Por tanto, hay cerca de 80 sílabas fonéticas en la lengua maya clásica y más de 200 grafemas silábicos en la escritura. Si se compara con otros sistemas de escritura mesoamericanos, parece claro que el empleado por los mayas era capaz de registrar estructuras lingüísticas tan complejas como la sintaxis presente en las manifestaciones orales de sus lenguas. En la práctica, en cambio, el sistema de escritura es el resultado de la abreviación grafémica de estructuras sintácticas altamente complejas, de manera que se requiere que los elementos que han sido omitidos se reconstruyan por los lectores familiarizados con el idioma de las inscripciones.
