Este libro brinda la primera descripción gramatical integral del choguita rarámuri, una lengua yuto-azteca hablada en la Sierra Tarahumara, una cadena montañosa en el norteño estado mexicano de Chihuahua perteneciente a la Sierra Madre Occidental. Un corpus documental desarrollado entre 2003 y 2018 con expertos en lengua choguita rarámuri informa el análisis y es la fuente de los ejemplos presentados en esta gramática. El corpus documental, que consta de más de 200 horas de grabaciones de datos obtenidos, narraciones, conversaciones, entrevistas y otros géneros de discurso, está disponible en dos colecciones de archivo alojadas en el Endangered Languages Archive y en el Survey of California and Other Indian Languages de la Universidad de Berkeley.

Este libro ofrece la primera traducción al español del único diccionario de la lengua tarahumara producido durante la época colonial que perdura hoy en día, así como el primer análisis detallado de su contenido. Perteneciente a la familia lingüística yuto-nahua, la lengua tarahumara es hablada en el norte de México por más de 80,000 personas, quienes se refieren a su idioma y a sí mismos como Rarámuri. El diccionario, escrito en alemán, fue compilado por el jesuita moravo Matthäus Steffel y está basado en su experiencia como misionero entre los tarahumaras durante los años de 1761 y 1767. Más de mil palabras tarahumaras, así como diversas dimensiones de la gramática del idioma, son documentadas y sus entradas léxicas son enriquecidas con descripciones precisas de la cultura tarahumara del siglo XVIII. El libro incluye traducciones y transcripciones de las dos versiones existentes del diccionario. Estas se complementan por capítulos analíticos y apéndices que facilitan el uso de los datos que contienen e indican el valor de la obra para la investigación lingüística y antropológica moderna.

La obra constituye una crónica dedicada a narrar el diálogo que la autora entabló, desde el año 2002 hasta la redacción final, con rarámuri o tarahumaras de distintas regiones de la Sierra Tarahumara, en Chihuahua, México. El corazón del presente escrito es el registro del proceso de construcción de una teoría etnográfica sobre la antropología rarámuri, es decir, de una metodología para describir la relación entre distintas formas de producción de conocimiento y del conocimiento resultado de tal interacción.
La peculiaridad del proyecto desarrollado en el escrito radica en reconocer explícitamente el papel co-creativo de los rarámuri. El proceso metodológico de la propuesta consiste en situarlos como agentes teóricos antes que sujetos pasivos. Simultáneamente, este desplazamiento reubica a la autora en posición de traductora y redefine la relación entre los datos y la teoría. Con base en los conceptos y las experiencias del camino y del caminar de los rarámuri, el trayecto del libro constituye una apuesta para imaginar y practicar otras antropologías posibles.

La presente investigación es un aporte a los estudios de género culturalmente situados, pues considera la especificidad cultural rarámuri como elemento fundamental en la construcción de prácticas y representaciones de las relaciones entre mujeres y varones. De esa manera, el libro analiza la resignificación de las relaciones de género rarámuri como consecuencia de la migración y residencia en los asentamientos de la ciudad de Chihuahua, así como la construcción de sus identidades étnicas. Se argumenta que la vida en estos lugares congregados, la mayor cercanía con las instituciones gubernamentales, así como los cambios en las condiciones materiales de producción y reproducción fomentan la resignificación de las relaciones de género que otorga un nuevo protagonismo a las mujeres. Todo esto genera efectos y respuestas diferenciadas en el conjunto de la unidad doméstica familiar, propiciando ajustes en los modelos de complementariedad, sin por ello romper con la hegemonía patriarcal, que en el caso rarámuri no está determinada de una manera absolutamente jerárquica. Esta particularidad ha permitido flexibilizar las normas de género propiciando una mayor visibilidad y presencia de las mujeres en tareas que antes se compartían o eran exclusivas de los varones, como por ejemplo los puestos de siríame o gobernadoras indígenas.

La rica diversidad cultural del mundo indudablemente se puede relacionar con las distintas realidades de acceso al líquido vital. En el caso de México la cultura azteca o mexicana se desarrolló en el Valle de México en un medio ambiente acuático, donde se construyó un paisaje cultural de chinampas y canales. En este contexto, la UNESCO se dio la tarea de correlacionar lo que es la cultura del agua de un pueblo con la oferta natural y sus características etnográficas. El objetivo de este trabajo es identificar, registrar y sistematizar el conocimiento en relación a lo que los pueblos hacían y siguen haciendo con el agua, en el agua y por el agua.

A partir de las relaciones que el textil establece con el resto del todo social, esta investigación apunta a explicar una percepción del mundo según los tarahumara o ralámuli. Una cada vez menor cantidad de mujeres y, en ocasiones, también hombres pertenecientes a esta etnia –asentada en su mayoría al suroeste del Estado de Chihuahua en el norte de México– tejen principalmente fajas o cinturones que forman parte de su vestimenta tradicional. A pesar de formar parte de ésta, el tejer y los textiles parecen ser una actividad y un objeto poco valorados y cada vez en menor práctica y uso, particularmente en el contexto urbano. Sin embargo, tras participar en la cotidianidad y tratar de entender el lugar que ocupa el tejer en esta etnia, puede sugerirse un vínculo entre los diseños tejidos, los textiles y las narraciones acerca del origen del mundo y elementos cosmológicos.
