La presencia de una gran cantidad de grupos –étnica, cultural, política, económica y lingüísticamente distintos– crea dentro del estado una compleja dinámica que no termina de ser estudiada. Esta investigación, que ha surgido tras largas búsquedas por tratar de comprender qué ocurrió con las poblaciones que habitaban más allá del centro de México y de los Valles Centrales del estado oaxaqueño durante la época prehispánica y Colonial, tiene como principal objetivo el conocimiento de la configuración sociocultural y territorial de una porción de la Sierra Cuicateca. En dicho espacio han interactuado desde tiempos muy antiguos mazatecos, mixtecos y cuicatecos, que si bien se diferencian notablemente en determinados aspectos, es posible observar elementos bastante similares como resultado de esta larga convivencia.
