A partir del análisis de algunas secciones del Códice Borgia, presuntamente mixteco, la obra suma argumentos a la existencia de una literatura proso-semasiográfica en los códices mesoamericanos. Esta categoría existe a partir de la relación entre los elementos performativos de la lectura de estos manuscritos pictóricos y lo que está pintado/escrito en ellos. La importancia de esta perspectiva es regresar a un estado básico de los estudios literarios que abordan las distintas fases del periodo prehispánico en México y revisar algunos presupuestos. Para el autor, existen algunos elementos de folklorismo enmarcados en la sobrevaloración de los "poemas" indígenas, que son parte de una lectura parcial de los autores de la historia oficial. El objetivo de este trabajo es sumar argumentos a la apreciación literaria de los códices mesoamericanos.
