En Tzintzuntzan, ciudad que fuera la capital del imperio purépecha, estas obras fueron integradas en el convento franciscano que data desde el siglo XVI. Tal vez no haya, en todo México, otro recinto virreinal en el que elementos prehispánicos figurativos hayan sido usados de manera tan profusa e incluso evidente. Los contextos históricos prehispánico y virreinal de los janamus se atendieron con la misma importancia y han permitido advertir en su reuso una compleja intencionalidad con hondas implicaciones de tipo político, económico y social. Entre otros puntos, se proponen relaciones con el arte rupestre y se plantea que dicha reutilización pudo ser parte de un programa de recuperación del antiguo esplendor de Tzintzuntzan. La continuidad cultural indígena, sin negar los cambios históricos, es una idea presente a lo largo del libro.
