Los códigos de identidad étnica reflejados en los tejidos han llegado hasta hoy gracias a la continuación del trabajo en los telares del seno familiar, pero se sabe que surgieron en Mesoamérica en el periodo Preclásico (110 a.C.-200 d.C.) por las figurillas de barro adornadas con faldellines, bandas y tocados. En la época de la Conquista, las mantas no sólo protegían a los usuarios de las inclemencias del clima, sino que constituían el artículo por excelencia del tributo requerido a los pueblos sojuzgados por la Triple Alianza, como se revela en la Matrícula de Tributos y otros documentos. Las más ricas se ofrendaban a los dioses y servían de atavío a los señores; otras, se usaron como valor de cambio en las transacciones comerciales; algunas más se utilizaron como alfombras, para tapizar muros, como colchas e incluso como soporte para los mapas.
