En este libro se ofrecen los resultados del análisis paleoepidemiológico realizado en restos óseos, en los que el estudio de las frecuencias de las patologías óseas y dentales retratan el estado de salud y las características físicas y socioculturales de los mayas de El Meco, en Quintana Roo. Además, a través de la paleodemografía se obtienen resultados sobre la fecundidad, la mortalidad y los ritmos de crecimiento de la población. Con estos datos es posible recrear el estado de salud y su dinámica demográfica. La hipótesis planteada consiste en que la salud de los mayas de El Meco se deterioró al mismo tiempo que su organización sociopolítica se volvía más compleja. En forma análoga a una ciudad moderna, donde el impacto de la actividad humana deja huellas en el entorno inmediato, en la ciudad de Teotihuacan, la explotación y uso de toba volcánica, tezontle, sedimentos, etc. se manifiestan en las cuevas y depresiones visibles actualmente en la zona.
