A través de esta obra nos podemos sumergir en el mundo maya del periodo clásico tardío, que abarcó el momento previo al llamado colapso maya. La autora aborda dos aspectos, en primer lugar el tema de las condiciones de vida que tuvieron los antiguos habitantes de esta gran ciudad, analizando los problemas de salubridad, la esperanza de vida, paleodieta y enfermedades que padecieron los diferentes poblacionales identificados en el sitio de Palenque. Y paralelamente, partiendo de un análisis minucioso de los contextos funerarios hallados, determina el rango social que cada uno de los casos estudiados debió de haber ocupado en vida. De esta manera se presenta un trabajo interdisciplinario, que correlaciona la arqueología y la antropología física, ofreciendo un estudio integral de las condiciones de salud que presentaron los diferentes estratos sociales identificados en Palenque.
