Hay aproximadamente 200 signos silábico-fonéticos diferentes, de los cuales cerca de un 60 por ciento son homófonos. Por tanto, hay cerca de 80 sílabas fonéticas en la lengua maya clásica y más de 200 grafemas silábicos en la escritura.
