                <text>Las oquedades subterráneas y espacios oscuros, sugerentes de fantasías y mitos, significaron muchas cosas para los pueblos prehispánicos. Desde canteras de material constructivo, sitios de habitación, lugares de manufacturas que requieren humedad, centros de reformulación del poder político, sitios de generación de agua sagrada y manantiales, origen y matriz de pueblos, escenarios de rituales de paso, sitios de observación solar, espacios de tránsito del sol nocturno, lugares de la muerte, pivote del axis mundi.&#13;
El proyecto interdisciplinario "Estudio de túneles y cuevas en Teotihuacan" excavó extensivamente cuatro túneles al oriente de la Pirámide del Sol de 1993 a 1996: la cueva del Camino en San Francisco Mazapa, cerca de la depresión del restaurante La Gruta; la cueva de la Basura; la cueva de las Varillas y la cueva del Pirul, dentro de la zona arqueológica, en la depresión al oriente de la Pirámide del Sol. Estas excavaciones permitieron estudiar las ocupaciones epiclásicas (Coyotlatelco y Mazapa) y posclásicas (Aztecas II, III y IV).&#13;
Además del uso ritual de las oquedades subterráneas en Teotihuacan, el avance del proyecto reveló una riqueza de información de vida cotidiana de los grupos Coyotlatelco, Mazapa y Azteca que poblaron el valle de Teotihuacan, una vez que los teotihuacanos abandonaron el lugar. No sólo se recuperó información sobre su subsistencia y bienes teotihuacanos en áreas de actividad de tiempos posteriores, sino también sobre la producción de objetos, almacenamiento y las prácticas funerarias.</text>

                <text>Situada en el extremo noreste del Altiplano Central, Cantona es el nombre de una de las ciudades más grandes y complejas del México prehispánico. Emerge del agreste malpaís como si los derrames lávicos hubieran adquirido vida y sus contorsiones adoptaran formas y disposiciones arquitectónicas motu proprio. Difícil es, a simple vista, distinguir en ese paisaje fantasmagórico lo que hizo la naturaleza y lo que transformó el ser humano para convertirlo en sede de una de las sociedades estatales más complejas y longevas de nuestra historia. Más que un simple asentamiento extenso, más que una ciudad, Cantona fue una metrópolis, con todo el sentido actual de la palabra, y el centro rector regional en el extremo oriental del Altiplano, desde al menos el año 300 a.C. hasta el 950 d.C.&#13;
Este es el primer libro que explica el proceso de desarrollo de su estructura urbana, desde las primeras evidencias del asentamiento hasta su abandono, tomando como ejemplo el centro cívico-religioso más importante de la ciudad. Para ello, la autora analiza las características urbanoarquitectónicas así como el entorno natural, de los que derivaron la producción de alimentos, artefactos líticos y cerámicos, y los compara con los de otras sociedades contemporáneas, principalmente de la región del Bajío, para construir interesantes hipótesis sobre la identidad étnicocultural de los habitantes y constructores de Cantona.</text>

                <text>En las ofrendas del Templo Mayor de Tenochtitlan se han recuperado miles de objetos lapidarios con morfología e iconografía semejante a la de los principales estilos mesoamericanos. Sin embargo, en la mayoría de estas comparaciones no se tomaba en cuenta las técnicas de elaboración. Por ello, en este libro se presentan los resultados obtenidos durante casi dos décadas del proyecto &lt;em&gt;La lapidaria del Templo Mayor: estilos y tradiciones tecnológicas&lt;/em&gt;. Los análisis traceológicos fueron realizados a casi diez mil piezas hechas en obsidiana, travertino, turquesa y piedra verde; algunas de ellas clasificadas en los estilos olmeca, mezcala, teotihuacano, maya, mixteco y azteca/mexica. Los patrones de manufactura se compararon con colecciones de los supuestos lugares de origen, se logró confirmar o descartar su filiación cultural local o foránea, así como detectar un conjunto numeroso de objetos de estilo imperial tenochca.</text>

                <text>Los trabajos emprendidos en Palenque por el Precolumbian Art Research Institute (PARI), bajo la responsabilidad de Merle Greene Robertson y Alfonso Morales Cleveland, incluyeron la exploración del Templo XIX a partir de 1998 y hasta el año 2001. Se trata de la primera y única intervención arqueológica que se ha realizado en dicho edificio y constituye una importante fuente de información para el estudio de Palenque, una de los principales capitales mayas del periodo Clásico (250–900 d.C.). En esta obra se presentan, analizan e interpretan los datos de excavación del Templo XIX. En la primera parte se ofrece una síntesis de las excavaciones, así como el análisis de los materiales localizados en el edificio. En la segunda parte, se presenta un ejercicio de interpretación en torno a uno de los contextos más significativos hasta ahora descubiertos en Palenque, en el que resalta la exposición de un edificio atípico en el sitio, tanto por las características arquitectónicas como por el hallazgo no sólo de monumentos escultóricos excepcionales, sino también por las evidencias de actividad en torno a un trono monumental. Destaca la alteración de dicho mobiliario producida por personas que ingresaron a la ciudad abandonada en el Posclásico Temprano, de acuerdo con los fechamientos absolutos obtenidos en esta investigación, quienes pretendían recobrar el contenido del trono: muy probablemente las reliquias de sus antepasados. Las remociones señalan la relevancia que el edificio, el trono y su contenido seguían teniendo, aún después de muchos años del abandono de la ciudad.</text>
