Su origen se remonta a la época prehispánica y los jesuitas los incorporaron a principios de la colonia entre los grupos de origen cahita, de los cuales sólo sobreviven los yaquis y mayos. Su influencia fue tan significativa que se extendió a otros grupos de la región, como los guarijíos, pimas, o'odham, tarahumaras y tepehuanos del norte, que también tienen un origen lingüístico uto-nahua y yutoazteca.
