Fue así­ como Teresa Valdivia Dounce se interesó en conocer cuáles habín sido los factores que incidieron para mantener con vigencia este uso. La autora realizó su investigación en catorce municipios de las regiones alta y media de la sierra mixe, en el estado de Oaxaca, donde hizo un minucioso examen de las estructuras y formas de gobierno indígena, así como de las formas para elegir a sus autoridades y observar el cumplimiento de sus normas jurídicas. Teresa Valdivia nos muestra así la complejidad de los sistemas jurídicos mixes mal llamados "usos y costumbres" ya que la forma de elección de sus autoridades es sólo una de las normas comprendidas en su sistema jurídico o de derecho, el cual ha sobrevivido gracias a varios factores que desarrolla en su obra.
